As far as world cultural and natural heritage is concerned, the Azores have two UNESCO world heritage classified areas: the Historical Centre of Angra do Heroísmo (first in Portugal, in 1983) and the Landscape of Pico Island Vineyard Culture (2004). On 24 June 2019, UNESCO designated the Underwater Archeaological Charter of the Azores one of the top five examples of best practices for underwater cultural heritage protection,.

The nine islands in the Azorean archipelago are all volcanic by origin.

Santa Maria : The oldest of the islands (roughly 8 million years old) and the furthest east, it is known as the “Island of the Sun”. This is where you will find the archipelago’s rare white beaches.

Sao Miguel: his is the island of the Lake of  Seven Cities This island is also home to the only tea plantations in Europe.  And where the main airport is located.

Terceira : the island offers unique natural landscapes such as the largest laurel forest on the islands. a World Heritage Site since 1983, and the first city in Portugal to obtain this UNESCO classification.

Graciosa : Part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2007, As the least hilly island, produces wine harvest – One of its products is the liqueur Andaia, made by distilling red wine.

Sao Jorge: This is the source of the São Jorge cheese beloved around the world.

Pico: One of the archipelago’s two UNESCO classified sites, the protected Pico winegrowing landscape, is another reason to visit, and one that provides the opportunity to sample the Azores’ increasingly renowned wine.

Faial: The Faial Nature Park is one of the island’s commitments to conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources

Corvo: This is the smallest island in the archipelago with 465 inhabitants. It stands on a volcano that began to emerge from the sea around 730,000 years ago

Flores: The most westward point of the old continent, this is the last place in Europe where the sun sets.  most of the island is covered in blue hydrangeas

An average sea temperature between 22ºC in summer and 16ºC in the winter and good visibility in the crystal-clear water make the Azores the perfect diving destination. The variety of landscapes – some with volcanic bottoms – rich ecosystems and underwater archaeological sites are some of the main attractions for keen divers and anyone who wants to take their first steps in deep-water aquatic adventures. From swimming with the world’s largest fish (the whale shark) in transparent water to finding yourself surrounded by dozens of giant oceanic manta rays or blue sharks, everything is possible in this oasis of Atlantic marine life. In an area lying between nutrient rich currents from the north and warm currents from the Gulf, Azorean waters are home to five species of marine turtles, over 24 species of cetaceans and around 600 species of fish
