It offers a rare opportunity to hike in magnificent, unspoilt nature, watch and photograph wildlife, and enjoy cultural activities.

The wide range of activities will take you to the best hiking locations in the wild to see animals in their natural environment. You will see bears, moose, birds of prey and wolves, and the nature offers an ever-changing background for your photos. Wild Taiga is full of life every day of the year.

The Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos) – the national symbol of Finland – is the largest carnivore in Europe. Eastern Finland is home to a large amount of brown bears.

Bear watching and photography trips are organized in the Wild Taiga area from April to September. There are overnight trips you can stay in a hide, giving you a better chance of seeing a bear visiting carcass laid down especially for them. Bear watching trips are organized for individuals and groups alike.

Accommodation

Arola Farm is located near the Russian border and Martinselkonen Nature Reserve. Hossa, the 40th nationalpark of Finland is 45 km from Arola. They organize guided bear watching tours from May till August. You can watch and photograph the life of the wild bears from the safety and comfort of purpose-built log cabins. They are equipped with seats, beds and WC. In addition to bears you might also see white-tailed eagles and elks.

Nearby Hossa Nationalpark offer great possibilities for hiking, canoeing, skiing and fishing. For fishermen River Karttimojoki is also worth a visit.

The farm is famous for traditional country food supplied by their kitchen garden, and the surrounding countryside and forests. The farm also has a fully equipped two bedroomed cottage Hevonkuusi by River Taivaljoki. The cottage is perfect for a longer holiday

HEVONKUUSI COTTAGE ROOM WITH A VIEW, AROLA FARM

This cottage is near the river and not overlooked by any other cabins. You can also take advantage of abundant berry crops in the nearby fields.

Bear Safari

This is an unforgettable experience. You can observe and photograph the bears up close and in complete safety and with an expert guide. The hides are close to the Russian border in Suomussalmi next to the Martinselkonen wilderness area. Hides are wheelchair friendly.

The bear season starts the end of April and lasts until the 17th of August.

There are various other Bear Watching trips that you can upgrade to if you prefer.
